Abstract:

Archive of Janet Delaney's photographic survey of her South of Market neighborhood (SOMA) in San Francisco. Photographic prints and slides document residential interiors of artists and other neighbors, local small businesses, various buildings, streets, construction scenes and general neighborhood views of the SOMA district during the early years of the urban redevelopment and gentrification that dramatically altered the neighborhood in the 1980s. Also includes material related to exhibitions and other presentations of the survey images, various notes, fliers, clippings and other papers pertaining to the survey and/or the neighborhood. Audiocassettes contain interviews, slide show audio, etc.
